Mango Yummy

After having dinner at Shanghai House, we headed to Mango Yummy to try their Mango Sago for the Chinese Restaurant Awards. Like many dessert restaurants, Mango Yummy is fairly small restaurant and the seating arrangements are cramped. There are a couple of tables and a few chairs outside for when the weather permits however.

SIGNATURE MANGO SHAVED ICE AND ICE CREAM ($7.00).
Rating: 2.5/5.
Starting with the Signature Mango Shaved Ice and Ice Cream, it does not disappoint for shaved ice. I say it does not disappoint because as a fan of only shaved milk or shaved flavours, the shaved ice itself is soft and fluffy rather than chunky and icy. The plentiful amount of ripe mango and the large scoop of ice cream makes the dessert enjoyable as well.

MANGO SAGO AND GRAPEFRUIT ($7.00).
Rating: 3/5.
Up next, the medium size bowl of sago has a mild mango flavour, a medium level of sweetness, plenty of tapioca pearls, a decent amount of ripe mango and bits of grapefruit pulp. The consistency is not too thin either and you can tell it consists of mango pulp, but it could have been thicker and more rich.

HOT GRASS JELLY ($6.50).
Rating: 1/5.
Going for something hot, the Grass Jelly has a very unappealing thick goopy texture. This is a shame because there are plenty of well prepared quality ingredients such as red bean and mochi, which are not too sweet. This dessert is more like a soft molten jello rather than grass jelly.

DURIAN SHAVED ICE AND ICE CREAM ($7.00).
Rating: 2.5/5.
Ordering another shaved ice and like the Signature Mango, the Durian one consists of fluffy ice that is neither chunky nor icy one bit. There is a generous amount of durian too, but I personally find the texture in this case too soft and unappealing. As for the ice cream, I like the brand used because the texture is fairly hard and the vanilla is not too sweet.

MANGO, STRAWBERY AND MOCHI THICK TOAST ($7.00).
Rating: 1/5
Listening to Sherman and ordering the Thick Toast, unfortunately it is stale, not fresh and the exterior is very crunchy while the interior is soft. To top it off, there is a generous amount of sprinkled sugar that really has no purpose and all I can think of is how do you mess up toast? As for the side of fruit and mochi, the mochi tastes soft and bouncy but honestly does nothing for me.

CREPE AND MANGO ($6.00).
Rating: 2.5/5.
Last up, the Mango Crepe does not taste as fresh as Sun Sui Wah's (they have the best!) and there is not much flavour despite the good amount of mango. The crepe itself is too thin too, but I like how Mango Yummy makes their own whipped cream.

Mango Yummy does the job for those who want dessert and are in the area, but I personally think the food can be better especially when considering the restaurant is located in Richmond. The prices are reasonable and the portions are a good size, but the items we ordered would not be anything I would come back for.

POSITIVES
- Large selection of choices
- Controlled level of sweetness
- Shaved ice itself is well prepared

NEGATIVES
- Nothing you cannot get elsewhere

Food: 2.5/5
Service: N/A
